Getting back into writing reviews I get to review my favorite authors newest book The Time Spring. I had trouble downloading the book to my ereader (in fact, I couldn't) so I read it on my computer. I know, cry me a river, just review the book already. So here we go.

The Time Spring marks a difference in author Heldt's usual m o. This is a stand alone work departing from his usual series presentation. The story actually spans present, past, and even a little future. The reader has to really take note of the chapter headings to keep up with what time they are in.

John Heldt's story telling ability is on full display here. Characters are well defined and presented in such a way that the reader connects with characters and are drawn immediately into the story, vintage John Heldt to be sure. A new wrinkle (at least one I don't recall from previous works) is a real love triangle, spanning all three time frames. No spoilers here but the way our intrepid author addressed and resolved this triangle was very satisfying. The Time Spring continues to highlight Mr. Heldt's growth as a story teller. His treatment of this story is a bit more adult oriented. Still very family friendly, but maybe a pg instead of g rating. Albeit a mild pg.

The past time is set during World War Two. Author Heldt always includes historic events in his books, although this time the war does not play as big a part of the story as usual. The focus is on the major players (as it should be), and the development of the interplay between characters does not disappoint. Mr. Heldt's ability to build a narrative around his cast of characters brought together by time travelling circumstance is what sets him apart from other authors. It is this ability that makes him this readers favorite author. He brings his characters alive in realistic ways. Very enjoyable as a reader.

The Time Spring is a very good introduction to author Heldt's work for readers who have not encountered his books before. And if you haven't read his other work; Why not? You should get to it!

Enjoy!

So there you have it. My review of this book on it's own merit. Now I want to address another more personal aspect to my reactions to this newest piece of work by Author Heldt. As a long time reader (I have read and reviewed all of his previous work) I had some reactions that would not be allowed on many review sites. Amazon would block me if I posted this on their site. They don't like personal sharing in reviews on their platform. Phtt to Amazon!

The Time Spring is an excellent book on it's own as a stand alone story. But as a reader of Mr. Heldt's previous works ie; the series' he has delighted me with over the last several years. I have some thoughts. Obviously in a three or five book series, the depth that can be explored is much greater than can be achieved in a singular work. And while the focus in The Time Spring was mostly on the personal relationships of the principles was well done, there just cannot be as much depth and development as in the longer series I have become accustomed to. Make no mistake, I am not in any way casting aspersions on this most current book. I am saying that Heldt has spoiled me with his longer series. One of the things I have enjoyed most about his work is that I get to spend 'quality time' with characters I have come to care about as a reader. He keeps me interested even while I have to wait for new installments. Had I not been spoiled as a continuous reader of his work, The Time Spring would have impressed me as a quality story told effectively and engagingly (if that's word). But I cannot in good conscience ignore these reactions when I am asked to share my opinions on any work.

If Author Heldt has decided to continue to write stand alone books, I'm on board, but I will miss the series experience. I can imagine the series is a much more time intensive activity and may be a part of the decision.

Bottom line, John Heldt is the author and he can tell his stories in any format he chooses, and I'll be along for the ride.

I have been away from this site for quite a while (duh!) Just to let any interested parties know, I have been dealing with health issues that became fairly serious. I had two hospital stays for a total of 14 days and three surgeries to eradicate an infection in my back. Still don't know for sure if the infection has been defeated, but for now things have settled down a bit.

During this time I did read several books which I will get to reviewing as I am able. I will share that I indulged in my guilty pleasure; Deathlands books. I found a book site that had all the books from the series that I had been unable to find. The whole series has, I believe, 130 books. I found and bought the last 17 I needed to complete my collection. I binge read them all. I won't bore you with 17 individual reviews, that would become quite tedious I'm sure.

For me Deathlands stories, set in a post apocalyptic America some 200 years after the final war. They revolve around a group of survivalist warriors as they move around the country. They are graphically violent, at times graphically sexual and always action packed. They are escapist, over the top, adventures.

I am somewhat sad that I have finished the series but such is life.

Anyway, just a note to let any interested followers know, I hope I am back for good.

Thanks for reading.

Mike
